Week 6: Wiki Reflection Blog
The very first time I visited the Wiki I was a bit overwhelmed. I
had never done any work on or with a Wiki except for occasionally looking at
information on Wikipedia. Since the our
Wiki space was created a good bit before we needed to post any information on
it I was able to take the opportunity to look around the site and get my
bearings a bit. Our group leader
Stephanie did an excellent job setting up our wiki and made it very easy to
navigate and find where to post our information. The next time I visited the space I worked on
adding my references and writing the outline for my literature review. At first I wasn't entirely sure where to post
everything, but I found it pretty quickly.
I found that I do not like the way the spacing works when it is
saved. I tried several times to format
the outline as it should be but came up unsuccessful. The last time I worked on the Wiki was to
post my Literature Review. I decided to
write the review using a Word document then copy and pasted it into the Wiki to
avoid any trouble. I thought this went
pretty well, but again ran into formatting problems when saving the document. Our group decided to color code the work that
we did on our Wiki. Each person wrote in
a different color to make it easier to see the various contributions. I wrote in purple and contributed several
different resources as well as an outline and four pages for the review about
BYOD curriculum. Each group member is working on writing two questions for our test. Since the concept is
fairly new it was difficult to find resources that gave us information
pertaining to the subject. I do feel
that I am much more aware of the concept of BYOD, and feel that it would be a valuable
addition to a school if they were to choose to undertake a similar program. Working on the Wiki allowed me to see some
opportunities that I may not have known about before in working with students
with what is available. Not all
classrooms have state of the line devices, but if there are digital devices
available it would be great to try to implement them into the learning process. I enjoyed working with my group a great deal,
and I believe that the communication was very easy and helped a great deal when
we really got into the meat of the project.
Week 5: Muddiest Point Blog
In the first video I viewed with Dr. David Brown I
found the concept of metadata a bit unclear.
I understood that this metadata can be used to trace information sent
from a computer or e-mail, but the use of the data was not clear to me. I was not sure what the purpose of some of
the data would be, or why it would be necessary to send the data. Dr. Brown said it was possible to limit the
amount of data that is sent from emails and from Microsoft Office Documents,
but I had a bit of difficulty understanding how it was done. I would be interested in making sure the data
that is sent out with some of the documents I create is limited to only things
I am comfortable with others seeing, but I did not understand how it should be
done. I have heard of metadata before,
but I never knew the extent of how it could affect those who create the data or
send it out unknowingly. In the future I
will definitely try to be more cautious about what others can view that is sent
from my computer, and limit the private information the public can see. I believe that this concept is overlooked in
the digital age we live in, and that it is not addressed as much as it probably
should be. If it truly is an issue it seems that classes which require information to be sent over the internet should address the issue up front.

EDUC 639 Week 1 Introductory Blog
Here is a link to visit my introductory video blog on youtube! Megan's Introduction
EDUC 639 Most Important Blog week 2
For my interview I talked with a
former teacher who now trains teachers how to integrate technology into the
classroom, and how to do it well. This
woman spent about 20 years in the classroom, but was put into the position of
technology training about 5 years ago.
She travels to various schools in the district, and leads classes and sessions
of teachers and future teacher about how to integrate technology effectively. During the interview one of the important
facts that I found was the importance of the technology personnel developing
personal relationships with teachers so that they trust them and value the
information they are presenting. It’s
important to give teachers the insight as to why you think the technology is
important and examples of how it has worked.
It’s a great idea to do the research, find great ways to integrate
technology, but if the teachers don’t buy into the practice that is presented
it will not get used in the classroom. I
believe this will help me in the future because I think this concept applies to
all educational situations other than just educational technology. If teachers do not develop good relationships
with one another and value each other’s educational expertise, than chances are
they will not work together in the most effective ways.

HI Megan,
ReplyDeleteGreat post! It's nice to see you. We just celebrated our 26th anniversary ...God is amazing!
Hello Meagan,
DeleteYou said, " It’s important to give teachers the insight as to why you think the technology is important and examples of how it has worked. First of all I would have to say your interview is right on point. Mainly, about the part where you speak about effectively integrating technology within the classroom, networking, and building cohesive working relationships with each other. It is pivotal when teachers have to work on an interdisciplinary group team with one another and work collaboratively and cooperatively, especially as it relates to incorporating technology into the classroom. Not knowing a lot about technology can hinder effective working relationships with teachers.
When I conducted my Technology Implementation Plan in Minnesota two semesters ago. It was quite interesting on the research that some teachers still was not utilizing smart boards and other technology tools in the classroom like Ipads and other gadgets that could really improve student overall learning experience and process of subject matter, lesson plans, other related educational activities and events like simulations, especially how to utilized effective technology tools within the classroom like bring your own mobile devices (smart phones) as well.
Great Post, and I enjoyed reading about what valuable insight and information your interview bought about in the development of how important teachers utilized technology and integrate it in the classroom after having been trained through professional development training for how to integrate technology, gadgets, devices. It almost as if the teacher you interview job is to glean insight into why technology tools are not being utilized within the classroom, the problems and issues, as far as the pro's and con's etc.
To sum up the teacher you interviewed really provided a great case study where other teachers can view her action research through the lens of their perspective positively as what needs to be done and change as a reflective practitioner when it comes to educational technology. Thanks for adding to the blog for this week. God Bless, Janice.

ReplyDeleteMegan,
Good luck in your passion in getting a job in the kindergarten/first grade for your local school. My youngest son is going into the first grade and I love the fact that his teachers are happy to incorporate technology into his classes.
I like how technology is now used daily in the classroom and would like to see it incorporated more as you state! Our children today know how to use the internet, games, and interactive lessons. Lets use them to educate and incorporate learning.

Megan,
ReplyDeleteNice to see you again. Good job on your blog. My video response is at this link... http://youtu.be/CVM2UpM15-g
Thanks,

Hi Megan!
ReplyDeleteIt is great to work with you again. Congratulations on your anniversary. YAY!
I know its pretty exciting to be almost done with getting your masters. I still have 2 classes left and its so close but feels so far away.
I hope you get the teaching position!
Good luck,
Olivia
Megan, I totally agree with you about trust because without who can we talk to or try to convince that something is better than something else. On my job have people who trust me but my problem is sometimes me trusting them. If you are a Christian and you walk and talk with the Lord then he will let you who to trust and who not to trust. I love everybody and try to treat everybody right every day. I would like for you to pray for me that I will grow stronger in trusting other people who come in my life. I love the Lord and I believe he will continue to lead and guide me through this situation. I thank God for this class because so far it has taught me a lot.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on almost completing your degree. I too agree and have seen that without trust and guidance it is hard to get especially teachers to buy into using technology to enhance the learning process. I work with lots of teachers and still will find a couple who will not ever want to use it, to them technology is for fun. It is going to be hard for those teachers when it is mandatory to keep your job by inter-grading technology.
ReplyDeleteHI Megan,
ReplyDeleteI did not see a place to comment on your week 2 blog so I am commenting here. Your insight is right on target. How might you provide that additional layer of support and training in order to move your teachers forward in integrating technology?
Best,
Dr Courduff
Megan,
ReplyDeleteThat sounds like an awesome job and well needed in any school district. As she mentioned, it is important to first discuss objectives and show examples to provide teachers with why and how; therefore, scaffolding the buy-in. I love to model in classrooms using technology showing how it can make our jobs so much easier. For example, by doing a simple formative assessment with clickers at the beginning of the class, you can get the results and tier your class for instruction in seconds. I am dumbfounded when I see interactive whiteboards just used as glorified chalk boards...they are SO MUCH more. Technology can be an awesome tool! I know that if this person begins with those that are anxious to learn, the enthusiasm will grow inside of the district. Soon, those teachers that are not on board, will begin to express curiosity. Woo hoo!
Hi Megan,
ReplyDeleteThis is a great post! This is also very true. Teachers must build trust before they buy into some of the new technology especially if their way has been working for many years. I found that this is also true with students. They have to build a trusting relationship with their teachers before they are open to learn new things.
Hi Megan,
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing the most important aspect of your interview this week. Below is the url to my video reply. -Cody

Hello Meagan,
ReplyDeleteNice to meet you . I hope you become a teacher in the kindergarten or First grade Elementary School you selected for preference of teaching. I watch your introductory blog and two questions that I had I know you utilized the trending word for educational technology you think is pivotal and highly being utilized today in the technology field is interactive technology. I do find that interactive technology is being utilized a lot in the form of technology tools for their effectiveness.
My question when you speak about interactive technology. What type technology tools do you utilized in the classroom, Ipads, BYOD, Smartboards, etc., to ensure your students can utilized technology tools effectively when integrating interactive technology in the classroom? I was intrigued when I observe you mention the key trending word interactive technology.
My other question is how might you have the students utilized technology tools in interactive technology in presentational form? I enjoyed once again watching your introductory video, and also I wish you much success toward completing your M.Ed degree, and your journey into the educational field. God Bless, Janice.
Thank you for your response Janice, The district I work for does not have iPads or other forms of tablets yet, but we are hoping to introduce them in the future. I have used my personal tablet with the students and they really enjoy the ability to manipulate the technology on their own. In the K5 classroom I would not implement a BYOD program simply because those are awfully expensive devices for parents to put them into the hands of five or six year olds and allow them to carry them to school. The school I work in has Promethean boards which are the main way the students interact with technology during lessons. We also have a computer to use during center time, and teachers have the option of using ACTIvotes, Mp3 players, and document cameras.
DeleteHello Meagan,
ReplyDeleteYou can view my response to your Introductory Video Blog. I tried to respond back to you on YouTube. I left a video response but it is also waiting on your approval before it can be posted. The link to view my response is at http://youtu.be/oclmTuqeQlc. I am still new at this hopefully in time I will get better. God Bless, Janice.
Meagan if I said North Carolina on my response to your Introductory Video Blog than I am apologetic.

Hi Megan I too was a bit confused about the Metadata. I understand that it can be a problem or a solution to helping tracking down someone who does not want to be found. But like you it is unclear why to use it just because you can. This was my first time hearing the term and I now will be paying more attention to using word and my emails. I just don't want to be that aha person for something I did not know was wrong. Great post.
ReplyDeleteHi Megan,
ReplyDeleteOk - here is a really fun activity for you to try - google yourself!
Seriously - put your name into a google search and scroll through websites and images linked to you. You will see metadata in a whole new light :)
Looking forward to what you discover about your online presence...
Dr Courduff
I actually had trouble finding much information that applied to me. I found photos and links to my Facebook Profile but that was about it. I guess I am doing a good job of staying private! ;)
DeleteIn your group with your research prospectus implementing your BYOD on four year college campus. I believe with this research you can increase test scores. But it may be a problem as far as funding the BYOD. With the significance of this research I believe that if you get other college involved then you might have a better chance as far as funding and sponsoring your BYOD. Do you think that your hypothesis will actually increase student score? I believe that with your topic along you should be able to find a lot of information and also your group should be able to gather the data you need as well.
ReplyDeleteCarolyn, that is the beauty of the BYOD program. The cost for the district is minimal. The main cost for a school is the wireless infrastructure as well as proper bandwidth to accommodate for the increased use. At this time we don't know what, if any, effect a bring your own device program will have on student performance.
